Rant: People

I went with a friend to Michaels today, on a pilgrimage to find bits and bobs for crafting. I was just about finished when I remembered I had meant to pick up an awl for use on a wee goblin book I've been studiously working away on. I didn't know where to look, so I grabbed the first employee I saw. This was our conversation:    

Me: Hi, I'm looking for an awl..
Girl: Uh...what?
Me: An awl.
Girl: I don't know what that is.
Me: It's a long pointy thing you can use for poking holes in paper, amongst other things.
Girl: Yeah, I don't think we have that. I've never heard of something like that.
Me: Okay, thanks
Girl: Nope (looking at me like I'm insane the entire time)
